Back pain and poor sleep are locked in a frustrating feedback loop. Pain disrupts sleep, and poor sleep increases pain sensitivity, which further disrupts sleep. Research published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that people with chronic pain are 18 times more likely to experience sleep disorders than the general population.
Spinal alignment plays a direct role in sleep quality. Subluxations in the cervical and thoracic spine can compress nerves that regulate muscle tension and the body's ability to fully relax. Misalignment in the lumbar spine makes it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position, leading to frequent waking and restless nights.
Chiropractic adjustments can help break this cycle by restoring proper alignment, reducing nerve irritation, and decreasing muscle tension. Many of our patients report improved sleep quality within the first few weeks of care — falling asleep faster, staying asleep longer, and waking with less morning stiffness.
Beyond adjustments, we also advise on sleep positioning and pillow selection. Side sleepers benefit from a pillow thick enough to keep the cervical spine neutral. Back sleepers need a thinner pillow and may benefit from a small roll under the lumbar curve. We generally advise against stomach sleeping, as it forces the neck into sustained rotation that stresses cervical joints. Small changes in sleep setup, combined with regular chiropractic care, can make a remarkable difference in both pain levels and sleep quality.
