What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

Walking into a chiropractor's office for the first time can feel uncertain, especially if you've never had a spinal adjustment. Knowing what to expect removes the anxiety and helps you get the most from your visit. Here's exactly what happens at Summit Spine & Wellness during your first appointment.

Your visit begins with a health history review and consultation. We'll ask about your current symptoms, medical history, medications, and daily activities. This conversation typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and helps us understand the full picture of your health, not just the symptom that brought you in. Next comes a physical examination including posture analysis, range-of-motion testing, orthopedic tests, and neurological screening. We may recommend X-rays if your exam findings warrant a closer look at your spinal structure.

Once we have a clear picture of your condition, we'll explain our findings in plain language — what's happening, why it's happening, and what we recommend. If you're a candidate for chiropractic care, we'll outline a treatment plan including expected frequency, duration, and goals. There's no pressure to commit on the spot.

If you're comfortable proceeding, most patients receive their first adjustment during this initial visit. The adjustment itself is quick — a controlled, specific force applied to the targeted joint. You may hear a popping sound, which is simply gas releasing from the joint capsule. Afterward, some patients feel immediate relief while others notice gradual improvement over the following days. We'll provide aftercare instructions and schedule your follow-up visit before you leave.
